Bondage is nothing but consequence of the mind emotionally attached to the senses and the sense-objects. When the mind is so attached to any of the sensory perceptions, it then perceives the objective world for its likes or dislikes. The senses are:
These are the 5 senses through which we get in touch with external world. These senses are the source of distraction. It is the mind that is in direct control of the thoughts, senses, breath, and body. But we cannot change the nature of the senses. The instant we wake up, our mind employs our senses because they are there, and they are permanently engaged. It is not possible to avoid the situation. If we have never trained our mind in how to deal with the external world, then there is sure to be confusion. The sages teach that you should develop clarity of mind, and learn not to be distracted by the external confusion or stimulation.
Our Senses are not reliable at-all. While the external world keeps changing, the very senses with which we observe that world are able to have experience only within their own limited range. Everything in this universe is vibration. A particular range of vibrations manifest in physical form which our eyes can see. Then a more higher range of vibrations can also be heared by ears but cannot be seen. and so on. In other words, the eyes see only a limited range; the ears hear only a limited range; and so also with smell, taste, and touch. They all provide useful, though limited, inadequate information when seeking Truth or Reality. God/Truth is behind senses. As on pouring oil in fire will increase the fire, and the stopage of oil will eventually stop the fire. Same way, if senses gets their associated enjoyments, their (senses) desires would increase. But when Mind restraints from these sense pleasures by thinking about its true nature then senses gets calm.
e.g [ Our naked senses tell us the earth is motionless and each day the sun travels around the earth; but in reality the earth spun on its axis and orbited the sun in an elliptical orbit. ]
e.g [ On a hot sunny day, we saw water on the road. But it is just the mirage effect. ]
e.g [ Look at the following image. If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink. If you stare at the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green. If you concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture; after a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if you're lucky! There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear. This should be proof enough, we don't always see what we think we see and similarly our senses are also not reliable. ]
e.g [ A deer can be caught by enticing it with sweet sounds like those of a flute. Upon hearing the flute, the deer stands motionless, entranced; an elephant, during the mating season, is easily lured by the touch of a female elephant; a moth is attracted to the light of a flame not knowing that if it falls into it it will burn; a fisherman baits a hook, and a bee is attracted to the odor of a flower. Each of these creatures gets into a death trap due to attachment to a single sense object. What then can be said about humans who hanker after not one but five sense objects? Without the ability to discriminate between what is permanent and what is transient, believing sensory pleasures to be paramount, man has become a beast. ]
e.g [ In old days there was a method of drawing water from a kind of well in which a wheel is pulled by horses or bulls, and it brings up the water. Once a horseman came with his horse and wanted his horse to drink water. That horse was thirsty and wanted to drink water, but the noise scared the horse and it would jump. So, the horseman asked the proprietor of the well, "Will you please stop this noise so my horse can drink?" The proprietor replied, "But if this noise stops then the water will also stop.". Therefore it implies that if we think that the we will do the meditation when my mind is calm or if we think that we will do meditation once I'm free from my responsibilities; then it is not possible. We need to train our Mind not be distracted by the senses and search God within ourself. ]
